Toasted California Club

Have you ever had a new favorite at a restaurant whether it be lunch or dinner and every time you go back you order the same thing???  Well, lately mine has been the California Club at Chili's.  So being the cook that I am, I decided I can make the same thing at home.
Well ya know what....I did and it was AMAZING!   Once I figured out the secret of how they get it all yummy tasting, it was just a basic ham, turkey, Swiss, bacon, and avocado sandwich that was extra yummy because of the way they did the toasting.  Yesterday I made this amazing sandwich for Royce and myself for lunch.  Yum!

Here's what you need:

2 slices hearty wheat bread, they use a wheat Texas Toast at Chili's so I am on the lookout for it if you know where to buy it, please let me know
butter for browning the toast
2 slices of oven browned turkey breast
2 slices of honey or brown sugar ham
2 - 4 slices of bacon cooked
1 slice Swiss cheese
1/4 Avocado
mayonnaise (I can't stress enough but only Best Foods for my house, NO SANDWICH SPREADS ALLOWED)
mustard, lettuce, onion, tomato (optional)
*These ingredients are for one sandwich only

Preheat a skillet on med-hi.  Butter (and yes, real butter works best) both sides of each piece of bread and place on the heated skillet just like a grilled cheese.  Prepare all the fixings while the bread is toasting.  When both sides are nice and toasty start assembling the sandwiches.

First I used mayonnaise and mustard.  Then I put on the ham (mine was from a ham I cooked on Saturday night) turkey, and bacon.  Next came the Swiss cheese.

Only my half sandwich got the yummy avocado.

Next put on the lettuce and any other veggie fixings you like and then the top piece of toast and slice in half.
Oh look I finally found a use for the 9 million left over cocktail toothpicks I have laying around the house!
Come to mama.......   Here is My version of Chili's Toasted California Club

Enjoy!

  1. The difference in toasting the bread in a traditional toaster or on a Panini press is that the butter lends its own flavor to the sandwich and the meat stays cold from not using a Panini press. You can of course adapt it any way you like. Enjoy!
