Homemade Hamburger Helper

One of my all time favorite meals to prepare and eat is my Homemade Hamburger Helper.  This is a take off of those boxed things they sell in the stores, but much healthier because it's from scratch.
My family loves this and I have since introduced it to my in-laws and they loved it too.  I hope you'll give it a try and let me know what you think.

Here's what you need:

2 pounds lean ground beef
8 oz. can tomato sauce
2-1/2 cups chicken stock
2-1/2 cups water, up to 3 if you like it really saucy
2 cups elbow macaroni
2 Tbs. chili powder
1 Tbs. granulated garlic
2 Tbs. dried minced onions
2 Tbs. dried parsley
3 Tbs. beef bouillon
2 Tbs. cornstarch
1 Tbs. brown gravy mix, from gravy package
1/2 tsp. pepper

In a bowl mix all the spices and set aside.
In a large pan or stock pot brown ground beef on medium high until completely cooked.

Add the spice mix and stir to coat the meat.

Add the tomato sauce and stir to combine.  Add the chicken stock and water (2-1/2 cups but up to 3 if you like it really saucy) and mix well.

Add the macaroni and stir to combine.  Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer and cook, covered, for 15 minutes or until the pasta is tender.  Be sure to stir every few minutes so the pasta doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan.

Serve with bread and a salad, Yummy!

Serves 8 or more depending on your appetite.

I will link up the recipe for 4 - 6 (which is my original recipe) I have since stated to feed more people so I adjusted this recipe.

**Note - the spice mix is the same quantity for both recipes.

Enjoy!

  4. Love that you took something boxed and made it healthier but still simple. I make something similar with beef, taco seasoning and pasta. Thanks for sharing on Tout It Tuesday.

  5. Thank you! We like these types of meals but I would prefer homemade. Now I can make the spice pack up myself and have some ready for days I need to hurry up and make dinner.

  8. So glad I found this recipe! It's so much better than any of the other hamburger helper recipes that I have tried! I was wondering if I could substitue the gravy mix with more beef bouillon and flour though?
