Here's what you need:
1 can pork and beans (or if I can't find them I use baked beans)
1 can kidney beans - red, drained
1 can cannellini beans or great northern beans, drained
1/2 pound bacon
1/2 pound ground beef
1/2 yellow onion, diced
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup brown sugar
3 Tbs. cider vinegar
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. granulated garlic
1/2 tsp. ground pepper
I doubled the recipe for this and used triple the ketsup, brn. sugar, & vinegar to make it the perfect bean/meat to sauce ratio.
In a large dutch oven brown the meat then remove to a bowl. Cut the bacon in to 1/2" pieces and cook for a couple of minutes then add the onions and cook until they are tender and the bacon is crispy.
Add back the cooked hamburger and the rest of the ingredients. Preheat oven to 275 degrees. Bring beans to a boil then cover.
Put in oven and bake for 3 hours. Stir about every hour. They are done when they are a dark brown and have thickened.
Enjoy!
These are great as a full meal or as a side dish.
A single recipe serves 6 - 8 as a side dish
