I remember the old copper cookie press with a twist handle our grandmothers used and then the newer silver/metal ones with the gun like grip and squeeze handle our mothers used. All the way to the newest kind today which is most likely made of plastic.
These cookie presses come with several different shapes to use and the best Spritz cookie recipe is right on the box.
I love these cookies because they are a straight up butter cookie with sprinkles.
I always make them at Christmas time so I only use the corresponding shapes but should really make them all year long because the kit provides shapes for almost every holiday there is.
These are fun for the whole family and you should make a batch today!
Here's what you need:
1-1/2 cup butter, at room temperature
1 cup sugar
1 egg, at room temperature
2 Tbs. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. almond extract (or vanilla if you don't like almond)
3-1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
In a mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer cream the butter and sugar until fluffy, about 3 minutes.
Add the egg, milk, and vanilla and/or almond extract and mix well.
Add the flour & baking powder and mix until incorporated. Scraping the sides as you go.
Place the dough immediately into the cookie press, place the shape you want to use on the top and screw on the lid.
Place the cookie press straight up and down with the press up against an ungreased unlined baking sheet and press the handle a few times to get the press started and to set the first cookie. Use a squeeze the handle and lift method to set the cookies
Continue placing cookies on the baking sheet until it is completely covered with cookies.
Sprinkle with colored sugar sprinkles and bake for 10-12 minutes or until just starting to lightly brown.
Immediately remove from baking sheet to cooling rack or they will STICK!
Mmm mmm yummy Spritz Cookies
Enjoy!
