Holiday Donut Tree

Don't you ever just get tired of the same old Holiday cookies and desserts?
Well I have a totally fun, family friendly, tasty dessert for your holiday table this year!

I have seen several different types of "dessert" trees over the years but the one I've always wanted to make was a donut tree.

Everyone loves a donut, right?  I know from experience that donuts make the perfect dessert after a rich holiday dinner.  I served them up last week as an experiment and it was a total hit.  There wasn't a donut crumb to be found after dessert was served.

Here's what you need for this super easy, tasty treat:

1 ea. 4-1/2 x 6 in clay pot
glossy paint for terra cotta, I used red and green
sponges or brushes for painting
1 ea.  3-7/8 x 14-7/8 inch foam cone
8 dozen donut holes
toothpicks (same amount as donut holes)
ribbon (any color or size up to 1 inch in width)
Greening pins or U shaped pins (I found these at JoAnn's)
Give your pot a couple of coats of paint until you are satisfied with the depth of color (I used about 3 or 4 coats)

When the paint is dry push the foam cone into the pot until it is secure.
Starting at the bottom push toothpicks into the foam so that about 3/4 inch sticks out, one at a time and gently push a donut hole onto the toothpick.  Go in circles around the foam.

Keep going in circles until you get to the top and top the tree with a large donut hole.
You can either fill in the little open spaces with frosting piped into the holes or you can make small bows with a festive ribbon and using a U shaped pin or Greening Pin, hook the back side of the bow and push the pin into the open areas on the tree to fill in the spaces.

This is such an easy treat to make and even little ones can "carefully" help too.  This is so pretty I'm using it for a center piece on my holiday table.
